Olympiaturm, München
Olympiapark München GmbH has commissioned us to redesign the foyer and observation deck of the Olympiaturm.
With its interplay of architecture, landscape and visual communication, the Olympiapark stands among the most significant ensembles of post-war modernism in Germany.
Since the tower opened in 1968, successive conversions have obscured much of the original interior. Our design restores the connection to that history.
In the foyer we draw on the forms and materials of the park, and on the visual identity Otl Aicher created for the 1972 Games, carrying that language into the present.
On the observation deck, the new bar returns to the tower’s original fit-out, with an adjoining multimedia exhibition space.
Both areas are being developed in close consultation with the conservation authorities.
More on the design
More than a thousand people visit the Olympiaturm each day, and every visit begins in the foyer.
By removing the partition that closed off the souvenir shop, we recover the openness of the original entrance, creating one continuous space with twice the retail area.
A central service desk brings together ticket sales, checkout and information.
At closing time the mobile display units roll behind a chain curtain that secures the stock while leaving the shop in view. The materials are those of the park itself. Aluminium and acrylic define the interiors, with visible construction details.
Upstairs, the bar takes its cue from the tower as it looked when it opened in 1968.
Beside it, an exhibition space with a multimedia concept and a large-format LED screen can also be given over to events.
