BELFORTE, Gärtnerplatz
At Munich’s Gärtnerplatz, BELFORTE reimagines the classic Italian trattoria for today.
Inspired by the lightness of southern France and the elegance of northern Italy, it is a space where timeless atmosphere meets sensual quality.
Technical requirements such as fire protection, structural engineering and building services were discreetly integrated into the design.
An innovative acoustic ceiling ensures a pleasant soundscape, reinforcing the ambition to let aesthetics and function coexist with ease.
Materials with tradition
Expansive windows open onto the lively square, their dark-stained oak frames with pastel inlays turning the urban scene into a stage.
Tabletops in shell terrazzo with fragments of oyster and scallop, a counter front detailed with brass rods that shimmer in the light, and a profiled bar shelf carved from green quartzite define the interior’s character.
Oak panelling across walls and ceilings, together with selected furniture and lighting from European manufacturers, strike a balance between elegance and intimacy, while a dark terrazzo floor grounds the composition in harmony.
A fresco created for this place
At the heart of the room is a wall fresco by Paris-based artist Florence Bamberger, created specifically for BELFORTE. Drawing on the surreal imagery of Giorgio de Chirico, it portrays operetta figures, a lyre and Orpheus in a theatrical scene. Subtle references to the architecture and spirit of Gärtnerplatz root the work in its setting, weaving Italian culture poetically into Munich’s identity.
Design with character
BELFORTE is more than a restaurant, it is a place with character. Restrained, elegant, and conceived as a modern classic.
